Time-Based Art Parade - Portland, OR - September 7, 2006

The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art's Time-Based Art Festival kicked off its 2006 edition with an Extreme Guitar concert in Pioneer Courthouse Square. Then the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers and the Get a Life Marching Band burst forth into the square and led a parade of several thousand Portlanders through downtown, across the Hawthorne Street Bridge, and over to PICA's space on the east side.. Here are a few early pix from the event -- more to come later!

Queen Victoria Days - Victoria, BC - May 20-22, 2006

The only thing better than a road trip? Why, it's GAL's first International Road Trip as we visit our Neighbors to the North. Three performance opportunities, a visit to world-famous Butchart Gardens, a personalized city tour by our own Tom Higham (who used to live in Victoria), and even a little pig-schmoozing make this a trip to remember. Amazingly enough, they even let us back into the U.S.  And we landed Third Place in the Performing Acts category of the parade!

Loyalty Days - Long Beach, WA - May 7, 2006

Time to load up the bus and head for the beach! Join us in Long Beach, WA for a red, white, and blue day, fire station lunch, and some rock 'n' roll with the band from Ilwaco High School. We even came home with a first place award!

Festival of Lights Holiday Parade - Salem, OR - December 10, 2005

A night-time holiday parade in Oregon? Sounds cold, dark, and wet. Well, we lucked out this year and got a fine evening for a parade. C'mon, get lit with us and stride the streets of the state capital.

Pasadena Doo-Dah Parade & Disneyland - November 19-20, 2005

Our first California excursion! Two days, two wildly different parades -- both of them tons of fun!

Elephant's Deli Moving Parade - February 26, 2005

Moving day can be traumatic ... unless you invite hundreds of your friends to a parade and party. We helped the fine folks at Elephant's Delicatessen move to their new location in style. Hey, what's that behind us???

Animal House Celebration - September 4, 2004

Those zany folks in Cottage Grove decided to make their Animal House Celebration an annual affair, so we joined 'em again. We proudly snarfed the Top Band award even with our smallest contingent in years. But that only scratches the surface of a fun day; don't miss the full story of square corners, smoke wading, jamming accordions, and double-dipping!

Multnomah Village Days - August 21, 2004

It's small, but man that crowd is enthusiastic! Catch this year's doggie get-ups and a wide selection of GAL Members Wearing Spiffy Blue Ribbons right here.

Astoria Regatta Days - August 14, 2004

Enthusiastic crowds, a flat parade route, and an outstanding salmon barbeque -- how could we not like Astoria??? (And it didn't hurt that they awarded us the President's Trophy!) Check out the marching banana, dancing spectators, and a special museum visit.

Gladstone Chautauqua - August 7, 2004

We snagged the Chautauqua Award in the parade! Gladstone is our only three-performance event of the year, so there's lots to see! Sure, there are pix from the parade, the Chautauqua standstill, and the fire station -- but we've also got a BEM, a special birthday, and even some potty humor!

Beaverton SummerFest Parade - July 17, 2004

Imperial Stormtroopers captured U.S. Representative David Wu, but the rest of us had a pretty good day! Stop by to see Scooby-Doo, tap-dancing saxophones, and the most twirlers we've ever had for a parade.

St. Paul Rodeo Parade - July 4, 2004

2004 was our first-ever visit to St. Paul, a small town with a BIG rodeo, and we were at our red-white-and-blue best. Naturally, we've captured the color for you, but that's not all. Don't miss the pig racers, serenading the stockyard, and our version of "Alfalfa Fields Forever" in this pictorial.

Cascade Locks Sternwheeler Days - June 26, 2004

We kicked off our 10th Anniversary Season with a trip to Cascade Locks. The day was sunny and blue, the Columbia River Gorge was, well, gorgeous, the cherries and salmon were fresh, and the Mountain Man Rendezvous taught band members some new skills. We even won a blue ribbon! See it all along with a family portrait at Oregon's biggest tourist attraction that doesn't involve slot machines.

Meier & Frank Holiday Parade - November 28, 2003

We've been in the Holiday Parade before, but it's not every day we start a parade with an honest-to-Pete wedding! Catch all the holiday festivities and discover that, no matter what the common wisdom says, it is possible for two trombones to make beautiful music together.

Gresham Veterans Parade - November 8, 2003

Back to Gresham after a 6 week absence! Break out the red, white, and blue to honor our nation's veterans and do a rousing rendition of You're A Grand Old Flag with us.

Teddy Bear Parade - September 27, 2003

If you go down to the woods today, you're in for a big surprise — at least if the woods are in Gresham! A testament to the "any excuse for a party is a good excuse" spirit, the Teddy Bear Parade began as a way to commemorate historic Gresham downtown's switch from one- to two-way streets. We go both ways.

Animal House 25th Anniversary Celebration - August 30-September 1, 2003

Cottage Grove threw itself a party in honor of the quarter century since Animal House was filmed there, and we were among the guests. Would we be in the parade? Sure! Would we stop the band along Main Street to play and dance the Time Warp and whip the crowd into a frenzy? Even better! Would we stick around afterward for their special Toga Party featuring The Kingsmen and Otis Day & The Knights? Do you even have to ask??? C'mon along for all the sights and sounds, beginning with the rehearsals where we learned the Time Warp, then the trip to Cottage Grove and re-creation of the Faber College Homecoming Parade, the costumes and bands of the Toga Party, and the trip home the next day. Toga! Toga! Toga!

Multnomah Days Parade & Stage Show - August 16, 2003

Even with its new route this year, this is still the Biggest Little Parade around. Enjoy the second cameo appearance by the Blazer Dancers, learn about balanced diets, and watch the butterflies dance on our trip to Multnomah Village.

Astoria Grand Land Parade & Standstill - August 9, 2003

A flat parade route, an enthusiastic crowd, and salmon afterward add up to GAL heaven. Take a trip to the coast with us to learn whether the twirlers decided to play with the band or join the pirates!

Gladstone Parade & Chautauqua - August 2, 2003

A parade and a stage show? As far as we're concerned, it doesn't get much better than that! Check out the dance team's new uniforms and much, much more as we spend the day in Gladstone.

Beaverton SummerFest Parade - July 19, 2003

Get A Life members got to contribute a little something extra to this parade! Leslie Mundt is the chair of the parade, Ham Thorne graced the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce car current President, and Steve -- well, you'll have to see the whole story to find out about Steve's minor contribution.

Molalla Giant Street Parade - July 4, 2003

The sky was gloriously blue, our shirts were white, and by the end of the parade our faces were red (exertion, not embarrassment!). Celebrate Independence Day with us and the townspeople of Molalla on a perfect Oregon summer day. Don't miss the animated shot near the end where the whole band passes in review! Following the parade, one of GAL's own decided to spice up the day by making her first parachute jump. Get Karen's story right here.

San Antonio Fiesta Flambeau Parade - April 23-27, 2003

The Get A Life Marching Band made a return visit to San Antonio for Fiesta in 2003 and discovered it was at least as much fun as our 2001 visit. The digital cameras were going berserk on this trip — we ended up with over 1500 photos among us — but luckily for you we've cut it down to about 200 photos and a few video clips. Join us for some of the sights and sounds of the trip.

Lantern Festival Parade - February 16, 2003

It was a soggy New Year's night in Portland's Chinatown for the opening of the GAL 2003 season, but that didn't slow us down. Help us (and a few dragons) welcome in the Year of the Ram.

Meier & Frank Holiday Parade - November 29, 2002

What beats the heck out of getting up at 5AM on the day after Thanksgiving to go shopping?  Why, getting up early to be in a parade! Catch the holiday spirit with us as we end the 2002 GAL season.

Gresham Veterans Day Parade - November 9, 2002

It was a small parade, so here's a small photo gallery. Before the parade started, Wayne went in search of a photocopying machine to supply a few last-minute copies of Veterans Salute. He succeeded at a nearby nursing home ... but at the price of an impromptu performance! Besides the pix in the gallery, don't miss the brief video clips posted in our Sound and Video Gallery.

Multnomah Village Parade - August 17, 2002

Back again at the quirkiest little parade in Portland (which may be why we like it!) -- tune in here for heavenly horns, proof that chivalry is not dead, and a peek at our celebrity auxiliary unit.  For the "full GAL experience", check out the parade video clips posted in our Sound and Video Gallery.

Astoria Grand Land Parade - August 10, 2002

Join the band's second "road trip" of the year as we motorcoach out to Astoria. The town's been partying at Regatta time since 1894 and this year was no exception. Pirates, poses, porking out, and virgin hats -- see it all right here.

Gladstone Chautauqua - August 3, 2002

Always one of our favorite events of the year, and 2002 was no exception. Join us for the parade, a warmly-received performance at the Chautauqua, and our annual visit to serenade the crew at the Gladstone Fire Department in these pics.

Boise River Festival - June 28-30, 2002

Our first trip to the state of Idaho! We took the band to "America's Finest Family Festival" for three days. One water park, one marched-in parade, one watched parade, and two Power Pep Band performances later we flew home, tired but happy. Share 100 photos of our jaunt to The Treasure State right here -- and don't miss the added bonus of True Tales from the Boise River Festival!

Beaverton Festival Parade on Broadway - June 22, 2002

We open the summer 2002 season in beautiful downtown Beaverton, trying out Beat It and Soulfinger as parade tunes for the first time. You missed it? Well, weep no longer -- here's a quick synopsis from pre-parade to the hats-off finish.

Lantern Festival Parade - March 2, 2002

It's our first-ever "New Year's" gig as the band heads for Portland's Chinatown district to help welcome in the Year of the Horse.  All the action is right here, including the serenading of Heroner the Mayor.

Portland State vs Montana State Halftime Show - November 2001

The band took the field at PGE Park in Portland for a halftime show to end its 2001 season.  Haven't sorted these down to the "keeper" list yet, but here are all the photos we took!

Not a lot of pictures from this one, but here's a few including the official band photo from our 2001 appearance.

Molalla Giant Street Parade 2001

Celebrate Independence Day with us on a hot summer day in Molalla, Oregon -- lots of red, white, and blue!

San Antonio Fiesta Flambeau 2001

Road trip!  GAL broke out its sombreros and headed south to San Antonio for Fiesta 2001 on April 26-29. The Power Pep Band played a couple of concerts at the fabulous San Antonio Riverwalk, and the full Marching Band entertained over 400,000 screaming parade fans in the Fiesta Flambeau Parade.  And boy, did we have fun!  Catch the color and excitement of city that likes parades almost as much as we do!

We received the Grand Award at the Multnomah Days "Past, Present, and Beyond" parade.  Enjoy the local color in these 27 photos.

Gladstone Chatauqua 2000

A little smaller affair than Seattle, but a fine time nonetheless. These 29 photos should give you a flavor of the Chatauqua parade and standstill, and our visit to the Gladstone Fire Department afterward.

Seattle SEAFAIR Torchlight Parade 2000

On July 29, 2000 we headed up to Seattle to participate in the SEAFAIR Torchlight Parade, the largest night-time parade in the U.S.  This trip has quickly become a band favorite -- great trip, great parade, and a GREAT HIGH-ENERGY CROWD!

Beaverton "On Broadway" Parade 2000

Beaverton invited the Get A Life band to make a day of it, and we did!  We spent the morning of July 15, 2000 marching in the "On Broadway" parade, then followed it up with an afternoon performance at the Taste of Beaverton in Griffith Park.  Here are 29 photos to let you share the day with us.

Astoria Regatta Grand Land Parade 1999

Astoria's been celebrating since 1894 and it takes two parades in one day to do it right -- one on land, one on water.  We did the overland trek on August 14, 1999, winning First Place Band and First Place Drill Team as reported in The Daily Astorian.
