January 26, 2008
Southwest Airlines Gasparilla Pirate Fest
(Tampa, FL)
This annual event re-enacts a 19th century pirate invasion of the city; the mock invasion begins with the Pirates sailing into Tampa Bay on a full-scale pirate ship, accepting the surrender of Tampa from the mayor, and culminates in a parade attended by approximately 750,000 people. The parade begins at 2PM and runs approximately 3.5 miles down historic Bayshore Boulevard and into downtown Tampa. The parade boasts more than 90 elaborate floats, 14 marching bands, over 50 distinct Krewes, and the infamous Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla pirates -- and now the Get a Life Marching Band. Aaarrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!
April 19, 2008 (Sat)
82nd Avenue Parade of the Roses
(Portland, OR)
A new parade for the Portland area (only its second or third year), and a new event for GAL. The parade steps off at 9AM, and we'll follow up with a standstill performance at Eastport Plaza following the parade. It's our Portland-area debut for 2008, so come check out this year's version of the band!
May 4, 2008 (Sun)
Loyalty Days Parade
(Long Beach, WA)
GAL played this event for the first time in 2006 and landed a First Place award, then carried off the Sweepstakes Award as best of the entire parade in 2007. The 2008 theme is "Progression of Liberty". Parade steps off at 1PM; we'll also play a standstill show at the bandstand (3rd and Pacific) following the parade, around 3:00 PM.
June 21, 2008 (Sat)
Sheridan Days Parade
(Sheridan, OR)
Civil War general Phillip Henry Sheridan's namesake throws itself a 3-day party every summer. We visited for the first time 2007 and we'll back back! Parade steps off at 6PM; we'll also be near the Carnival (Sheridan High School) before the parade (probably around 4:30 PM).
July 4, 2008 (Fri)
Hillsboro Rotary Club 4th of July Parade
(Hillsboro, OR)
Hillsboro gears up for a HUGE Independence Day Parade every year, and we'll celebrate with them in 2008. We'll probably hit the Kiwanis breakfast early, and then the parade steps off at 10 AM. In 2006 we also played at the Washington County Courthouse as the parade got underway, so keep yer eyes peeled - it could happen again!
July 26, 2008 (Sat)
Division Street Parade
(Portland, OR)
This is a new event for us, but heck - it's a pretty new event for the organizers! The Division Street Parade fired up for the first time in 2007 and this is our year to check it out. The parade is coupled with a HUGE street fair, so hang around for the fun!
July 26, 2008 (Sat)
Tualatin Hills Park & Rec "Party in the Park"
(Beaverton, OR)
It's a double-header day for us; after spending the morning on Division Street, we're off to the Howard M. Terpenning Sports Complex (15707 SW Walker Rd, Beaverton) to liven up THPRD's Party in the Park.
Aug 2, 2008 (Sat)
Vernonia Friendship Jamboree
(Vernonia, OR)
2007 was our first visit to Vernonia and we had a darn fine time. We're going back again this year to make sure it wasn't a fluke! Join us for the parade and standstill in Shay Park afterward.
Aug 9, 2008 (Sat)
Astoria Regatta Days Grand Land Parade
(Astoria, OR)
GAL heads up the Columbia River to the 113th Astoria Regatta Festival. The Grand Land Parade steps off at Noon through downtown Astoria, and we'll play a show at the salmon bake afterward. Salmon bake? Hey, we're hungry already!!!
Aug 16, 2008 (Sat)
Multnomah Village Parade
If it's August, it must be time for the Biggest Little Parade in Oregon! We love the folks in Multnomah Village, and they've been kind enough to return the favor. Multnomah was the event that inspired National Public Radio's 2006 story on the band, so we're definitely looking forward to being back again. 2008 marks the 100th anniversary for Multnomah Village, so don't miss this Centennial Celebration!
Sep 13, 2008
(Sat)
Beaverton Celebration Parade
(Beaverton, OR)
News alert: Deathstar Stormtroopers capture Representative David Wu! Or at least they did when we visited Beaverton in 2004. Parade steps off at 10 AM through downtown Beaverton.
Sep 20, 2008
(Sat)
Puyallup Fair
(Puyallup, WA)
They've got one heck of a big Fair in Puyallup and this year we're going to join them for the first time. We'll be doing our Mrs. Robinson act ("stroll around the grounds until you feel at home"), so there's no telling where you might catch us! Hint: The large, hulking beasts are cows if they moo, sousaphones if they don't.
Oct 4, 2008
(Sat)
Oysterfest 2008
(Shelton, WA)
It's the first weekend in October, and that means the shells will be flying at the Mason County Fair Grounds for Oysterfest. The Pacific Rim Oyster Open Speed & Half-Shell Oyster Shucking Contests are the centerpiece of the festival. Free entertainment is on-going and includes the Get a Life Band for the first time ever. Wine tasting provided by several Washington State Wineries, Microbreweries, food vendors that are not allowed to duplicate each other's delicacies -- sounds like it's right up our alley!
Oct 11, 2008
(Sat)
Oregon Hill Farms Pumpkin Festival
We've had a great time celebrating the onset of fall and getting ready for Halloween with the folks at Oregon Hill Farms, so we're gonna do it again! Hay rides, pumpkins, food, great produce, and more -- come rock out (and pig out!) with the band! Oregon Hill Farms is at 32861 Pittsburg Rd, Saint Helens, OR; see their website and flyer for the Festival right here.
