Here's the new street routine for Brick House. Note that everyone in the band does the same moves at the same time, so this should be easier than YMCA! Even though the routine at the beginning is the same for everyone, some players do it longer than others so I've described it for each set of players to be precise.
Video: I grabbed some video today at rehearsal,
but unfortunately there's no sound. Even though we're not exactly perfection
yet <grin>, it's worth watching to get an idea of what the moves look
like (instead of having to intuit everything from the text). Video links are
marked like this
and included in the instructions below. The video is in Apple's QuickTime format
(which is all my camera captures). If you don't have QuickTime on your computer,
get it free here.
Definitions:
FM: Forward march.
4-count horn-pump (4CHP): "Keep time" using your instrument in the following pattern - Beat 1 is IN and center of body; beat 2 is OUT to left; beat 3 in IN and center of body; beat 4 is OUT and to right. Hit each mark with a little "pop" so it looks flashy.
Slide Step Pattern: See diagram below.
Brick House Move: See diagram below. The horn swings happen in time with the three low brass notes that make up the second half of bar 33.
| Measure | What |
| Bars 1 - 4 (TSax, TBone, Baritone, Tuba) |
Use 4CHP (see above) for bars 1-3. In bar 4: Beat 1 is IN and center of body; Beat 2 is horn UP and ready to play. |
| Bars 1-8 (Flute, Clar, ASax, Tpt, Hn) |
Use 4CHP (see above) for bars 1-7. In bar 8: Beat 1 is IN
and center of body; Beat 2 is horn UP and ready to play. |
| Bars13-25 | FM ahead down street. |
| Bars 25-32 | Slide Step Pattern: 8 counts (two
bars) left, 8 counts right, 8 counts left, 8 counts right. |
| Bars 33-34 | Brick House Move
(plant left foot at shoulder width on 1, wait on 2, horn swings LEFT-RIGHT-UP
on 3 and 4, wait, FM on beat 3). |
| Bars 35-40 | FM ahead down street. |
| Bars 41-48 | Continue FM ahead down street. When you
are playing the BACKGROUND part (with the long notes): Point your horn
FORWARD when you hit the short note at start of measure; point your horn
DOWN as you hit the long note, gradually bring it up to level as you
crescendo. First note in each measure is FORWARD (level), long note is
DOWN coming up. |
| Bar 49 | FM ahead down street. |
| Bar 50 | Execute the first four counts of the Brick House Move (plant left foot at shoulder width on 1, wait on 2, horn swings LEFT-RIGHT-UP on 3 and 4). |
| Bar 51 (first four counts after tune ends) |
FREEZE with horn still aimed UP. (Since the last note is played on 4-& of bar 50, it will "feel" like the first beat of the next bar. So this bar will feel like NOTE-2-3-4.) |
| Bar 52 | On beat 1, bring horn down and FM down street as drum cadence begins. |
